The best dictation apps for Mac, compared honestly
Six ways to dictate on a Mac, with prices read from each vendor's own site this month. Written by the developer of one of them — which is a reason to be suspicious, so this page also says plainly where Aria loses.

Apple Dictation works offline on Apple Silicon once its language pack is downloaded, and for short bursts it is fine. Try it before paying anyone. People leave it for three reasons, in order: punctuation, proper nouns it will never learn, and the fact that it cannot touch an existing recording. If none of those bite you, stop here — you are done.
If it is misbehaving, these fixes usually sort it →
The question that actually decides it
Not "which is best". These apps split cleanly along two lines.
Do you dictate, or do you transcribe? Dictating means talking and having text appear where you are working — Aria, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and VoiceInk are built for that. Transcribing means feeding in a recording — MacWhisper is the specialist. Aria does both, with the emphasis on dictation.
Does your voice leave the machine? Aria, MacWhisper, VoiceInk and Superwhisper can all run the model locally. Wispr Flow cannot: it is cloud-only by architecture, with no offline mode. If you dictate anything confidential, that single fact decides the shortlist.
Three years of dictation, in money
- Apple Dictation: €0
- Aria: €5, once, three Macs
- VoiceInk: $25 to $49, once
- MacWhisper Pro: €64, once
- Superwhisper Pro monthly: about $306
- Wispr Flow Pro yearly: about $432
A subscription is not unreasonable when the vendor pays a cloud model per minute — that is genuinely their cost. It is worth knowing which side of that line you are buying on.
Where Aria loses
- macOS only. No Windows, no iPhone. If you switch machines during the day, Superwhisper or Wispr Flow fit better.
- Not the file specialist. For hours of audio, batches, and subtitle work, MacWhisper is the more focused tool.
- No custom AI prompts. Aria ships a deliberately small set of transformations. Superwhisper lets you write your own.
- No enterprise paperwork. No SSO, no SOC 2, no HIPAA. That is Wispr Flow's territory.
- Not notarised by Apple yet. The first launch needs System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. It is one step, once, and it is a real annoyance.
- Small and new. One developer, no track record, no reviews yet. That is a legitimate reason to wait.
Where Aria wins
If you are on a Mac, dictate daily, refuse a subscription and would rather your voice not travel: €5 once, a local engine, text typed into any app, a dictionary that learns your names, file transcription with speaker labels, and a searchable local history. That combination does not currently exist anywhere else at that price.
